They witnessed the birth of Denver, kept store in mining camps, Augusta saved the pennies while Haw made friends and grubstaked itinerant adventurers, and out of a stake of $64.75 to a couple of Germans, Haw secured a one-third interest in the Little Pittsburgh Mine, which a few moths later he sold for $1,000,000.

Simonin, a Frenchman and a mining engineer, visited the region at the invitation of the commissioner of Colorado Territory. He witnessed the meeting of the Indian Peace Commission with Crow and Arapaho chiefs at Fort Laramie, tells about Denver and Cheyenne, and writes about it all in his letters to a friend in Paris.
